Cyclehoop are thrilled to announce that Managing Director, Anthony Lau is this year’s recipient of the prestigious Alex Moulton Award by the Institute of Engineering Designers (IED) in recognition of Cyclehoop’s contributions in the field of design. Previous winners of the Alex Moulton Award include the Dyson design team, Airbus engineer Gordan McConnell and Apple designer Jonathan Ive. Anthony attended the Annual IED Awards Ceremony at the Royal Institution in London in July 2017 to receive his award.
Cyclehoop was founded in 2008 by Anthony Lau and like many start-ups, the company operated from a garage in the earlier years. Inspired by the theft of his own bike, which was lifted over the top of a signpost, Anthony designed the Cyclehoop which won the ‘Reinventing the Bike Shed’ competition in 2006. To date, we have installed over 2,000 Cyclehoops on streets all over the world providing 4,000 cycle parking spaces.
Our Cycle Parking Rentals Scheme was the first of its kind to be used in the UK with 5847 people currently renting a cycle parking space in our award-winning Bikehangars. Other key products to note include our Car Bike Port, Bike Port, Public Bike Pump and our Parklets.
Today, Cyclehoop’s London based experts are designing and manufacturing a wide range of products for the UK and worldwide community (16 different countries). We pride ourselves on creating quality award-winning and globally recognised innovations that troubleshoot problems for seasoned and prospective cyclists.
Cyclehoop have come a long way from our small operation in a garage and the Alex Moulton award is recognition of this. We now have a 32-strong team of passionate cycling enthusiasts on a mission to make cycling safer, more secure and convenient by breaking down the barriers to cycling.

I am really honoured to receive the Alex Moulton Award for our design work particularly as I am myself a fan the Moulton bicycle and proud owner of their beautiful AM7 space frame bikes from the 80s. I am passionate about bicycles, not just as a vehicle for transport or leisure, but as a vehicle to solve so many challenges that face our growing cities from traffic congestion, to air pollution and improving health and providing accessible and low-cost transport for everyone.
It is a real honour to be recognised by this award and it will encourage us to continue innovating and designing infrastructure solutions that will help to make cycling safer, more secure and convenient, and ultimately help to make our cities greener and better places to live and work in.
