This year, Helsinki in Finland was chosen as the 2012 Design Capital of the world. Since 1957, this prestigious award has been given to a different city each year by the World Design Capital.
It celebrates the accomplishments of cities that have used design as a tool to improve social, cultural and economic life.
As the capital of Finland, Helsinki is the centre of Finnish art and science. Design manifests itself in every aspect of this city, from digital solutions that make everyday life easier to city planning and architecture.
Cyclehoop is proud to announce that the City of Helsinki has installed five of our Car Bike Ports which are now integrated into the city’s contemporary streetscape.
The Car Bike Port converts a single car parking space into ten bicycle parking spaces. Shaped in the outline of a car, the design conveys the message that bicycles are more space-efficient than cars.
As a result, the City has removed five car spaces and replaced this with 50 bicycle spaces. This sends out a great message that they would like to encourage residents to cycle more and drive less.
“The Car Bike Ports in Helsinki look great and are well used by cyclists. Since installing them we have received a huge amount of positive feedback from locals through mail and Facebook. The racks have generated relatively big media value helping to promote cycling, as well as encouraging cycling in the city by providing locals with a secure place to park their bikes.” – Helsinki Council.
