From everyday transport to health, leisure and socialising, cycling has a wide range of benefits, but a lack of storage space at home can render it impractical for users of non-standard cycles.
Bikehangars are the ideal solution in high-density housing areas where storage space is limited; residents can park their bikes securely and conveniently on the carriageway. To address the problem of spaces for non-standard cycles, we updated the design of the racking in our recent iteration – the Bikehangar 4.2. One or more of the racks can now be removed, creating space for larger cycles.
Working with Hammersmith & Fulham Council, we created an adapted Bikehangar space for Camilla, a resident who uses a tricycle.
Camilla suffers from dyspraxia, a condition that can affect balance and co-ordination. She told us how her tricycle offers her a stable platform to cycle, and how prior to her Bikehangar space, it had to be kept outside, gathering rust.
Camilla was made aware of the possibility of a Bikehangar space by her local bike shop OMA Bikes, who put her in touch with the team at Hammersmith & Fulham. Residents can indicate their interest for a space via the council cycle parking webpage, and apply for a space at Cyclehoop Rentals. We encourage residents to fill out our Suggest a Location form, and contact the highways or active travel team at their council to register their need for a non standard bike parking space. We also suggest that people engage with charities like Wheels for Wellbeing to help find a suitable cycle if necessary.
The team at Hammersmith & Fulham then completed the arrangements with our team, making the adapted space available in just a few weeks.
“The Bikehanger space has completely changed my life… now I feel like I can fit in with the community and actually go out on my bike and go and see people easily”
Camilla, Hammersmith & Fulham resident
As cyclists ourselves, we’re passionate about helping everyone enjoy the benefits of cycling. We’re very fortunate to work with councils like Hammersmith & Fulham, and organisations like Wheels for Wellbeing who continue to raise the profile of non-standard cycles and make them accessible to the wider community. We’re also very grateful to Camilla for giving up her time to inspire others about the possibility of adapted Bikehangar spaces.
