We’re proud to share that Trips, our destination cycle parking project with Glasgow City Council, has been shortlisted in three categories at the 2025 Scottish Transport Awards.
We’re delighted to be recognised in the following categories:
- Excellence in Walking, Public Realm and Cycling
- Most Innovative Transport Project of the Year
- Excellence in Technology and Innovation
In summer 2023 we launched ‘Trips’; a network of secure bike parking units for cycle journey destinations. Operated via a bespoke smartphone app, the system allows the public to park their bikes securely while visiting town centres and other destinations. 20 Trips Bikehangars were installed in Glasgow City Centre in collaboration with Glasgow City Council. The project is the first of its kind in the UK; it distributes the cost and capacity of a conventional cycle hub into convenient nodes across the city centre by reallocating carriageway car parking spaces.

The service is part of Glasgow City Council’s Avenues Project, funded by Places for Everyone, a permanent active travel infrastructure programme backed by Transport Scotland and administered by Sustrans. It provides users of the growing cycle network with access to secure, weatherproof parking at their destination. Launched to coincide with the 2023 UCI World Cycling Championships in Glasgow, each Trips Bikehangar is decorated with the UCI rainbow stripes; an eye-catching celebration of Glasgow’s cycling culture.
The need for Trips is clear; police data shows that 4,092 bikes were stolen in Glasgow between 2020 to 2023. Secure facilities are key to encouraging residents to cycle into the city and park their bikes without fear of theft. The Bikehangar offers the highest level of security in the sector, it has achieved ‘Sold Secure Powered Cycle Diamond’ accreditation, proving resilience against both hand and power tools.
The major innovations behind the project were the development of our smartphone app and Bluetooth locking system. Available on iPhone and android devices, the Cyclehoop app allows the public to view locations, details and availability, and navigate to their chosen Bikehangar. Once there, users can start a booking and unlock the Bikehangar with their phone. Users can then monitor the duration of their booking and the time remaining until the next pricing bracket. Data is aggregated in our administration console, offering detailed reporting, providing insights into behaviours and usage trends.
A huge thanks to our partner, Glasgow City Council and to the local cycling community for embracing the scheme. We’ll share more as the awards approach.
