Cyclehoop have recently installed a row of stainless steel customised bike stands spelling out the letters B-R-I-X-T-O-N in Windrush Square opposite Lambeth Town Hall in Brixton.
The square in Brixton has recently undergone a hugely successful regeneration project. The bike stands were commissioned by Lambeth Council and aim to promote and encourage cycling in the area.
Based on the original LAMBETH cycle stands installed on Waterloo Road four years ago, the new stands are made from stainless steel with individual custom lettering laser cut and welded to the rings.
The stands help to provide bike parking for visitors to this area with a cinema, bars and restaurants nearby. They are particularly full during the day with many commuters locking their bicycles on the racks.
Anthony Lau, designer and Managing Director of Cyclehoop, says:
“The Brixton Bike Rack functions both as a secure bike stand as well as a piece of street furniture that adds identity to the area. Situated on a busy junction near the boundary of the borough, the Brixton bike stands can be seen by pedestrians and road users and act as a welcome sign to visitors entering or leaving Brixton.“
“Like other street furniture designs by Cyclehoop, the Brixton stand combines functionality for locking bicycles, aesthetic design and whilst also communicating a message to the public.“
Richard Ambler, Lambeth’s Cycle Programme Manager, commissioned the works and said:
“Space for cycle parking is in really short supply in Brixton. Windrush Square is an obvious place to put more cycle stands and the ‘BRIXTON’ stands allowed us to increase cycle parking supply whilst keeping the aesthetic of the square.“
