A first for the UK!

Cyclehoop in partnership with Lambeth Council will trial the UK’s first ever communal Bike Hangars on the street for local residents to securely store their bikes.

Bikehangars the innovative bike parking solutions designed to reduce bike theft and encourage cycling, are being trialled for the first time in the UK. With funding from Transport for London, Lambeth Council is the acclaimed pioneer of this development, installing a total number of 4 bike boxes, 2 in Bonnington Square in Oval and a further 2 in Crimsworth Road in Stockwell.

Already popular in countries such as Holland, these special bike hangars allow residents to store their bikes outside safely whilst reducing indoor clutter. Although the design of the bike hanger is extremely original, individuals partaking in this scheme can be assured that its procedure is undoubtedly simple. Residents will be given a key to securely lock their bikes and will pay a monthly fee of £5 to reserve a space in the unit.

Cllr Nigel Haselden, Cabinet Member for Regeneration Transport, and Strategic Planning said about such innovation: “Many residents in flats are put off owning a bike because they worry about it being stolen and don’t have the room to store it safely inside at night. These new bike boxes solve that problem and I’m really pleased to see them being introduced in Lambeth. There is a huge demand for cycle parking in built up areas like Lambeth and by helping more people get into cycling we can cut pollution and congestion.”

In a recent survey conducted by London Cyclist Campaign, bike theft was appointed as the biggest concern of cyclists following safety. The bike hangar invention can therefore be attributed to Lambeth’s wise recognition of this concern.

Let’s hope this trial is successful and more ‘bike hangars’ are installed across the UK!
